First day of the Button Blanket Project.  Katie Ludwig, Role Model Coordinator of the First Nations Education Centre for School District #82; met with ten Kitimat City High students this afternoon.  Katie began the session by providing information about he history and importance of button blankets in First Nations culture and how the very first blankets were made of fur and hides with embellishments.

The hands on teaching will continue for the next few days.  This will include how to dtermine the proper measurements for a blanket and crest; how to design, cutout and sew a crest onto the blanket; and where the abalone buttons need to be sewn on the blanket to complete the desgin of the whole blanket. When completed the blanket will adorn a wall at the school.  Pictures will be posted once completed.
