Message of Sympathy & Support from Superintendent of Schools

CMSD82 News Release – Message of Sympathy and Support – May 30, 2021

It is with profound sorrow that we acknowledge the discovery of 215 children found buried on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Our thoughts go out to the people of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and to all impacted by this devastating news.

Coast Mountains School District 82 mourns the loss of these precious young lives.  Flags at all our schools and office buildings will be lowered to half-mast from May 31 to June 8 at end of school day (215 hours) in memory of these children and to honour their lives.

We will take a moment of silence now to honour their memory and their families.  Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange on Monday, May 31.

When we lower our flags, we remember the 215 children who were taken and we also remember that we are ‘all of one heart’ – sagayt k‘üülm goot (suh-gite ghoul-em got).

We will be here to listen and support.  We are here to learn and teach.  We are all brothers and sisters.  We are all of one heart.

We all have a part to play in Truth and Reconciliation.  It is all of our work to do.  Every Child Matters.

Sincerely,
Janet Meyer
Superintendent of Schools
